Valerie joined Sharp & Partners in 1980, as an articled clerk. She qualified as a solicitor in 1982 and became the first female partner in the firm in 1986. Her areas of work are property law (both residential and commercial) and private client and she is the partner in charge of the conveyancing department. Robert Oates stepped down as senior partner in 2009 and Valerie has now been appointed the role of joint managing partner along with Chris Carlin.
Valerie is married with 2 children and her outside interests include Guiding (she is a Guide leader and District Commissioner) and walking.

Chris qualified in 1978 and opened our office in Arnold in 1979 where he is the managing partner dealing with wills, probate, residential and commercial conveyancing transactions. Married with four children Chris is a keen sportsman playing hockey football and golf. Robert Oates, qualified as a Solicitor in 1974 and joined the firm a year later becoming a Partner in 1976 with responsibility for developing the litigation side of the practice.
In those early years his caseload consisted of a broad mix of litigation including matrimonial, criminal and civil cases. As time went on Robert developed an interest in employment law with incoming partners taking responsibility for specific areas of law in the litigation department.
Now with more than 15 years experience in Employment Law Robert gives specialised advice on this complex area of law from the drafting of contracts and Service Agreements through to advice on Employment procedures and representation at Employment Tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal.
His overall philosophy is one of giving practical first class advice.
Outside work Robert has developed a keen interest in sailing obtaining an Offshore Yacht Master Ticket and acting as Watch Leader on the Lord Nelson, a Tall Ship designed specifically to take disabled people sailing.
He is married and has two children at a local school.

Chris obtained his degree in law at Leeds University where he was educated and inspired by Professor Brian Hogan, one of the country’s leading experts in criminal law. Qualifying in 1979 Chris has specialised in criminal and civil litigation ever since. He has been a police station and Court duty solicitor since the schemes were introduced.
He joined Sharp and Partners in 1980 and is one of the firm’s senior partners, working at Long Eaton.

Antony moved to Nottingham in 1986 to begin his professional training and qualified in March 1988 since when he has specialised in company and commercial legal work and in commercial property. He joined Sharp and Partners in 1994 and now manages the Long Eaton office having successfully overseen the refurbishment and redevelopment of the building bought by the firm in Market Square. He advises on Business and company sales and purchases comercial property transactioins including leases and land development and commercial agreements including franchise agreements.
